A gentle Waldorf preschool year at home

Preschool at home doesn't need worksheets, screens or a packed timetable. For children aged 3 to 5, the most nourishing days are often the simplest: a story told more than once, bread to knead, a walk to see what has changed in the hedgerow, a candle at teatime. That's the heart of a Waldorf-inspired early years rhythm, and it's something any family can begin, wherever you are.

Rhythm, not a timetable

Little ones feel safe when the day has a familiar shape. Waldorf families often talk about "breathing in" and "breathing out": quiet, focused moments such as a story or circle time, followed by freer ones like outdoor play or crafting. You might bake on Mondays, paint on Tuesdays and walk on Wednesdays. The same songs and verses return each week, so children can join in and feel at home in them.

Let the seasons lead

The year itself is the curriculum. Each month brings its own festivals, stories and small jobs:

Keep it small

Fifteen to thirty minutes of gentle focus is plenty at this age. One story told all week, one verse, one craft and one nature walk will carry a child further than a busy schedule ever could. Repetition isn't boring for little ones: it's how they learn, and how they come to trust the day.

A ready-made year: The Little Hearth Year

We made The Little Hearth Year for parents who love this way of living but don't have hours to plan it. Each month has a weekly rhythm, stories, songs and verses, seasonal crafts and nature study, all in calm, printable pages for ages 3 to 5. It comes in A4 and US Letter, with styled and light-ink versions.

Starting now? November and December are a lovely way to try a month on its own. For more ideas for the darker weeks, read our November intentions, or browse everything in the shop.
